             Artist Statement

Cristina Negrariu is an interdisciplinary Romanian artist living in London, with 8 years background in fashion and makeup industry, but passionate in exploring art and working with spaces, textures and different mixed media as a symbolic language to engage with the audience.

Most of the time, the work takes the form of an installation consisting of simple geometrical shapes that is displayed on a bigger scale in the space. 3D materials, sculptures, performing components, videography, storytelling, and textiles can all be used as elements in her installations. All the media used are surrounded by the same subject, which is family histories and intergenerational trauma, the key themes in her work.

Spaces are really inspiring because they allow to be rearranged and change the context of the subject. Spaces allow her to experiment and create an immersive environment for what she wants to be communicated.

She hopes to honour the subconscious human world through her art and to uncover common bridges that need to be crossed in our healing and integration from our pasts, traumas, and family heritage histories.

Biography

Cristina Negrariu is a Romanian-born, London-based multidisciplinary artist. Due to her desire to explore and expand her aesthetic vision in the makeup profession, she studied Fine Art at Middlesex University. Cristina was a very active child from an early age, loving to dance and being inventive in finding methods to fix various damaged household items; she enjoyed creating with her hands. In the meantime, she was skilled in literature and poetry, and her early love experiences inspired her to begin writing lyrics with a generally sad and melancholy tone. She began taking contemporary dance classes at an early age, and in high school she was a member of an amateur acting team with whom she travelled across the country to compete. From a young age, she would get together with her friends and end up performing photoshoots, style, and makeup for them; therefore, aesthetic has always been one of her passions. After graduating from high school, she confronted the reality that she did not enjoy studying Pharmacy  so she continued to do makeup instead. To gain additional experience in the beauty industry she was collaborating in various art environments and events

like theatre, singer concerts, advertising. In the meantime, she was completing her bachelor’s degree in Journalism due to her passion for writing, and she continued to explore art through photography, videography, and the incorporation of the body in her works, rather than the face. At age 25, Cristina travelled to London with the intention of exploring the artistic potential from her makeup work, which she did. She became a Fine Art student at Middlesex University after enrolling there.

Cristina is an interdisciplinary artist with a passion for deconstructive material manipulation, altering the shape, form, and context of an object. She’s working across different types of media, but they tend to involve aspects of storytelling and personal intergenerational trauma no matter what media she’s working on.

Spaces are highly inspiring; she enjoys decorating and rearranging them. Most of the time, her work takes the shape of an installation, which is exhibited on a bigger scale using sculpture, storytelling, textile, photography, videography, sound, and performing elements.

Memory, time, family history and trauma, as well as feminine, are the key themes explored in her works. Through her works, the intend is to honour the inner world of the human and create a connection between us all.
